Havanese Breed Overview

Find the Right Havanese Puppy for Your Family

The Havanese is a small companion breed known for its cheerful personality, intelligence, and long, silky coat. Developed in Cuba, the breed often forms close bonds with its human family. Adult Havanese typically weigh 7–13 pounds and stand 8.5–11.5 inches tall.

Their long hair, sturdy build, and expressive eyes give the Havanese an elegant and distinctive appearance. Affectionate, social, and welcoming, Havanese dogs often enjoy meeting people and participating in family activities. Individual temperaments vary, so early socialization and consistent guidance remain important.

Their intelligence can support training, but consistent routines and positive guidance remain essential. Their willingness to please can also support participation in agility, competitive obedience, and other dog sports. They enjoy companionship and may struggle when left alone for extended periods.

Their small size and adaptable nature can make them suitable for apartments and larger homes. They do not require a large yard, but they still need daily activity and mental stimulation. Short walks, play sessions, and training games can help meet those needs.

Their long coats need frequent brushing to prevent tangles and mats. Some owners choose shorter trims, but professional grooming may still be helpful. Routine dental, nail, and ear care should also be included in their care plan.

Individual size, coat, temperament, and health can vary among puppies. Ask a veterinarian about preventive care and health concerns associated with the breed.

For families prepared to provide grooming, training, activity, and companionship, a Havanese can be a loving addition.
